Ryan Marcus is an assistant professor of the computer and information science department at the University of Pennsylvania and an affiliated faculty member at the Penn Research in Embedded Computing and Integrated Systems Engineering (PRECISE) Center. Ryan’s expertise includes query optimization, data indexing, intelligent clouds, programming language runtimes, program synthesis, and reinforcement learning. He has developed learned query optimization techniques that have been deployed at companies including Microsoft and Meta.

Ryan’s research focuses on building next-generation data systems using machine programming roadmaps, which can automatically adapt to new hardware and user workloads, invent novel processing strategies, and understand user intention. He received his Ph.D. from Brandeis University and did a postdoc fellowship at MIT. He also served as an Intel Labs Scientist from 2020-2022.

Prior to joining Penn in 2023, Ryan worked at Amazon Web Services, where he helped to develop the key innovation of Auto-WLM on high performance data systems.
